«Wo geht das Licht hin, wenn der Tag vergangen ist» erzählt unsentimental und poetisch davon, wie man Verlust nicht wiedergutmachen, aber behutsam sichtbar machen kann.
«Dass ich diese Geschichte erzählen kann, verdanke ich der Ausdauer meines Vaters. 1943 gelang ihm die Flucht vor den Nationalsozialisten in die Schweiz. Sieben Jahre später begann er mit den Geschwistern, die auch überlebt hatten, mit dem sogenannten «Landesamt für die Wiedergutmachung» um Entschädigung zu kämpfen. Sie kämpften 24 Jahre lang. Das wusste ich nicht.
Nur ein einziges Mal erzählte er mir von seiner Flucht und der Ermordung seines Vaters und seiner Schwester. Und dass alle Dinge, mit denen sie gelebt hatten, vernichtet waren. Alle außer einer kleinen Fotografie, die heute in meinem Schreibtisch liegt.
Viele Fragen blieben offen.
In diesem Buch erzähle ich von den Antworten, die ich fand. Und von den Fragen, auf die es keine Antwort gibt. Ich erzähle davon, wie sich das Geschehene auf die Überlebenden, auf unsere Familie und auf meine Kindheit auswirkte und welche Rolle die Fotografie in unserem Leben bekam.
Mein Vater wurde nach seiner Flucht Grafiker und ein talentierter Hobbyfotograf. Alle lieben die Fotografie ja dafür, dass sie im Familienalltag oder Freundeskreis das Glück verewigen kann. Doch die Fotografie hatte für ihn noch eine weitere Bedeutung: Nachdem er alles verloren hatte, hielt er alles fest – Menschen, Landschaften, Dinge. Er musste alles in ein Bild verwandeln – in ein Ding, das blieb. Ihm schien alles, so empfinde ich es heute, besonders fragil, bloß die Reflexion eines im Luftzug zitternden Lichts zu sein. Jeden Augenblick konnte sich alles ändern. Diese Dringlichkeit dringt zu mir durch, wenn ich die Bilder, die nach dem Krieg entstanden, heute betrachte. Es sind die ersten Fotos, die er von meiner Mutter machte, und dann die Familienbilder, die er zu Alben band.
Mein Onkel, der Bruder meines Vaters, der Mitte der 1930er-Jahre und früh genug, wie es immer hiess, ins damalige Palästina floh, wurde in Israel ein angesehener Fotograf. Mein Bruder ist als Fotograf tätig, ich selbst schreibe seit 30 Jahren über Fotografie und habe viele Fotobücher herausgegeben: die Fotografie bekam offensichtlich für mehrere Familienmitglieder eine grosse Bedeutung. Während ich von den Jahren in der Nazi-Diktatur erzähle, in denen mein Vater Zwangsarbeit leisten musste, mein Grossvater und meine Tante ermordet wurden, denke ich in dem Buch auch über die Bedeutung der Fotografie nach. Mit einem Tagebuch und den Fotoalben, die mein Vater nach seiner Flucht zusammenzustellen begann, nimmt die Geschichte deshalb ihren Anfang.
Und: Mein kleiner Garten, in dem die Jahreszeiten kommen, gehen und wiederkommen, ist für alle da, die diese Geschichte lesen.»

CAS in Theory and History of Photography at the University of Zurich
This continuing education program CAS in Theory and History of Photography focuses on the cultural and historical significance of photography from its beginnings to the globalized present. Emphasis is placed on photographs in society and politics, in national and transcultural discourses, and in the museum, as well as on photographic images and processes in scientific theories and practices.
The CAS provides participants with a deeper understanding of the medium from a theoretical, art historical, and media historical perspective.
Drawing from more than ten years of insight, research, and experience built up by the program of international teaching and research on the Theory and History of Photography at the University of Zurich, participants are furnished with knowledge in the follow areas:
- The theory and global history of photography as a medium, in both its analog and digital forms
- Photography in its scientific, aesthetic, and historical contexts
- Artistic, political, and not least ethical engagement with photographs
Learning Objectives:
The program provides the foundation for the intensive study of photography as a visual medium with a focus on theory, history, and practice.
As a participant, you will expand your research skills in the field of photography and critically engage with theoretical discourses about photography. You will learn to analyze photographs as visual and artistic objects, considering the relationship between the history of technology, materials, and the intellectual history of images. As a visual medium, photography thus emerges in relation to social and political discourses and to contexts of exhibitions, museums, the art trade, and public media. In a process of ongoing dialogue, we critically examine this network of relationships.
The continuing education program is designed to meet the following learning objectives:
- As a graduate, you will be able to develop strategies for cataloging photographic works in museums, archives, and collections.
- You will be able to formulate ideas for assessing and analyzing a historical collection or an exhibition concept.
- You will be able to contextualize images within political discourse and as carriers of socially relevant messages.
- You will understand photographic images as an active form of communication that shapes society, and not merely as historical testimonies and illustrations.
