Daniel Blochwitz (*1973) is a photography specialist, working as curator, lecturer, publicist and advisor.
The curatorial projects he is pursuing tend to focus on artistic positions and topics that reside on the threshold of current areas of art historical attention and discourses rather than within. Of particular interest to him are inquisitive, pensive, critical and decelerating photo-based practices that are often of political nature and decisively anchored in the world. He has established himself as a critical thinker with a keen eye and an eloquent visual and verbal vocabulary.
He has curated photography exhibitions in museums and galleries in the United States, Switzerland and Germany. Previously, he has worked for contemporary art and photography galleries (mostly) in New York City and Zurich for more than a decade. He was also curator and artistic director for photo basel in 2018 and 2019.
Blochwitz graduated with a Master’s degree (M.F.A.) in Photography, including a minor in German Literature and Film, from the University of Florida in 2003 and participated that same year with Martha Rosler and the fleas collective at the Venice Biennial ('Utopia Station'). Afterwards, he attended the postgraduate Independent Study Program at the Whitney Museum in New York.
He lives and works in Zurich, Switzerland.
