
Dr. Julie Bonzon is a Swiss art historian, photography curator, and lecturer based between Zurich and London. She holds a PhD in Art History, specializing in South African photography, and has undertaken research and curatorial projects since 2015 on decolonial representation and contemporary lens-based practices, particularly within African contexts. She is the author of The Market Photo Workshop in South Africa and the ‘Born Free’ Generation (Routledge, 2023) and regularly contributes to publications and exhibition catalogues on photography. Bonzon has collaborated with renowned institutions worldwide, including Magnum Photos, The Photographer’s Gallery (London), Photo Élysée, the Olympic Foundation for Culture and Heritage (Lausanne), Fondation H (Madagascar), and the Sharjah Architecture Triennial, and served as Director of Photography at Messums London. In 2020, she founded The Photographic Collective, championing lens-based artists working in Africa.
Bonzon teaches in the CAS in Theory & History of Photography and in the Art History Department at the University of Zurich. In 2025, she joined the Foundation for the Exhibition of Photography (FEP) as an Associate Curator. In addition to her work at FEP, she independently organizes exhibitions and recently collaborated on Lehnert & Landrock: Revisiting a Colonial Archive at Photo Élysée (2025). She is also curating the upcoming Eva Diallo: Bollol at Photoforum Pasquart (2026).
