Dear members
We started the new, renewed association at the beginning of 2018: Spectrum - Photography in Switzerland (formerly ASIP). From now on not only institutions but also individual persons who are active in the fields of curating, collecting, mediating, writing, editing, restoring and publishing are included in the association. This will significantly change the association and make it a central platform for photography in Switzerland. We are all looking forward to it. The first steps have been taken: we launched the weekend in Soglio, refreshed and expanded the «photography-in-switzerland.ch» portal and are currently building up the expert database on the website. This newsletter here is a further step.
Here it is: the first newsletter from Spectrum - Photography in Switzerland! It will be shipped three times this year and four times a year in the coming years. The newsletter is addressed to all members of Spectrum - Photography in Switzerland, to the collective members, i.e. to the institutions, and to the individual members. In addition to news from the field of photography in Switzerland and information from the field of cultural policy, each issue contains an essay by a Spectrum member. Spectrum members report on their current fields of work. These reports, essays or pleas on photography topics are sent out in the original language in the newsletter and are also made available on the website in English. The newsletter in general will be sent out in English.
The Spectrum portal - photography-in-switzerland.ch - has been relaunched this spring. At the same time, the portal has been converted into a website. On one side the search system was updated, which allows to find museums, galleries, exhibition spaces, archives, collections, publishers, bookstores, schools, festivals etc. by keywords or by places, cities. On the other hand, the portal has been expanded to a small website. This will allow us to place not only news and events from Spectrum, but from the entire Swiss photo scene. In addition, the above mentioned reports and essays will be made accessible and a specialist database built up. In this database biographies, work fields, references to exhibitions, publications, etc. of our members, i.e. all of us, are stored. It shall become a useful tool, a kind of expert database that allows us to improve our internal and external networks and to put our work activities in the foreground. We will contact you about this database soon.
We meet for 48 hours in the most wonderful village of Switzerland, in Soglio above the Bregaglia valley and listen, look, talk, eat and drink. Topic: Data and Matter. From Platin Palladium Prints to Algorithmic Data. 48 people have registered. Prof. Dr. Bernd Stiegler will speak about the Digital Turn: «The Digital Turn - Revisited». Israeli artist Ilit Azoulay will present her personal work. She is a artist who melts data and matter in an incredible way. She is an archeologist of matter, of materials which she transform into data and weaves them into large carpets of datamatter/matterdata. The german artist Florian Freier is exploring social, cultural and political topics by working at the intersection of photography, digitization and communication. Among his key interests is the questioning of meaning in photography and visual documentation in contrast to abstract data from various public and private sources. Swiss photographer Raymond Meier and photo printer Regula Muedesbacher from Zurich will introduce us to platinum palladium printing. But above all we will spend the weekend together in the relaxing, airy, enriching context of Soglio, talking, eating, drinking, walking. (September 14-16, 2018)
Each newsletter is accompanied by an essay, a work report or a plea by a photography expert from Switzerland, in his or her mother tongue.
We wish you an exciting cultural June!
See you soon.
With kind regards
